STEEP STREETS OR TERTRES
The word Tertre is specific to Saint-Emilion and refers to the steep pedestrian cobblestone streets. There are four of them in the city: Tertre de la Tente, Tertre des Vaillants, Tertre de la Cadène and Tertre de la Porte Saint-Martin. Which one will you choose to climb?
The cobblestones were brought by English merchants, who, as there were trading wine, loaded them in the ships as ballast before replacing them with barrels full of a precious beverage: wine!
