AOC Montagne-Saint-Émilion, the recognition of an exceptional region
Between Pomerol to the west and Saint-Émilion to the south, Montagne-Saint-Émilion is surrounded by dazzling neighbors with whom it shares values, know-how and exceptional terroir. It's right in the heart of these remarkable lands of the Libourne region, on the right bank of the Barbanne, a tributary of the Isle, that our 1,600 hectares of vineyards stretch out.
A wine-growing region well known to wine-lovers for its reds, which are dominated by Merlot. Long dubbed the “satellite of Saint-Émilion”, it has managed to distinguish itself over the years thanks to the talent, passion and unfailing commitment of its winegrowers. Aware of the incredible potential they had in their hands, they were the ones who fought for Montagne-Saint-Émilion to gain deserved recognition.
A mosaic of wines and terroirs
More than just a part of our name, we share with Saint-Émilion the magnificent undulating landscapes that provide an ideal environment for growing vines. In fact, it's in reference to these reliefs that we call ourselves “Montagne”. The village of Montagne, which embodies the heart and soul of the appellation, has sat comfortably on the plateau for centuries. It offers its inhabitants, and the lucky visitors passing through, an unbeatable view of all the hills and valleys that make up its vineyards.
Bringing out the best in the appellation
There are two main types of terroir, both of which are responsible for the diversity of our wines. Our hillsides are rich in clay-limestone soils. In the glass, they are synonymous with structure and robustness. The more gravelly soils, just as interesting, are associated with finesse. Five grape varieties flourish here: Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Petit Verdot. Each has its own preferred soil.
