In 1572, Montaigne retired to his tower to spend the rest of his life concentrating on his "Essays". A great humanist work of the 16th century, Montaigne is a great figure of tolerance and open-mindedness in a context of religious wars ravaging France.
There's more to this historic terroir than just its character. It's also an opportunity to discover the Château of Pierre Magne, minister under Napoleon, and to stroll through Montaigne's land, which is also vineyards. The 11 hectares surrounding the estate have been given the name "Château Michel de Montaigne".

A listed monument of the 14th century, the Tower of Montaigne allows to retrace the life of the philosopher Michel de Montaigne through the 3 floors of the Tower: his chapel, his room where he will end his days and his famous bookstore where one can still observe The Greek and Latin maxims and phrases inscribed on the beams.

There is indeed a 19th-century castle, formerly Michel de Montaigne's stronghold, which has been completely remodeled, hence its architecture, which is quite different from the tower. It has been the private residence of its owners since 1860. Come and discover the life of a châtelain during the Belle Epoque.
