The reopening of local and national archives, together with an analysis of the Memoirs left by five Girondins, will help us to understand how political rivalries at the heart of the young French Republic gradually turned a group of deputies, united by their taste for freedom and a political project for progress, into enemies of the nation. We will also look at the months that some of them spent in Saint-Émilion after being stripped of their parliamentary mandate, hidden away by their families at the risk of their lives, in a period of proscription from which few escaped. The shattered lives of these few men and women in Year II (October 1793-July 1794) had a major impact on subsequent political life, as well as on national history and memory.
